Barack Obama’s entry to office and Gordon Brown’s had little in common, the former was incredibly popular and symbolised what many would hope would be a new era of change for America, the latter was not elected and his arrival in power was criticised by many. Thereafter there was however one significant similarity in the following early days of their leaderships in the series of problematic challenges that each faced. Gordon Brown faced terrorism, floods and the foot and mouth crisis all within his first 50 days in office, generally these were seen as a ‘spingboard’ for Mr. Brown’s early career as Prime Minister as he dealt with them decisively and with authority. Many may argue that things have changed more recently with the continued onslaught of the global financial crisis which was the huge challenge facing Mr. Obama’s as he entered the White House, especially as this crisis began in the United States. Mr. Obama and his administration haven’t announced a long term strategy for rescuing America from economic downturn, nor is there any clear plan for regulatory reform. Some commentators have criticised Mr. Obama for failing to lead the international community clearly and decisively with a long term vision, nevertheless the new President had a monumental task in front of him and he will likely be let off the hook for the time being by the majority, his first 100 days in office will be broadly seen as positive by America. Now of course we will wait to see how the US deals with Swine Flu, given the country’s proximity to Mexico rapid preventative and precautionary action will be essential in managing a potentially enormous threat to the United States.
