Predictions for 2009

“2008 seems to have flown by and with it comes the arrival of 2009. What does next year have in store? I thought I’d ask our team of expert consultants for their professional view of the big events of 2009. Here’s their festive take on the coming year. I wonder how many predictions will come true?

Both Chris Rumfitt and Susan Eastoe speculate that George Osborne will lose his job and be replaced variously by Ken Clarke or William Hague.

Not content with only one prediction, Chris Rumfitt, makes a second that the Speaker, Michael Martin, will step down as Speaker in the summer recess.

Our MD, Alex Bigg, focuses on the capital, predicting that there will be trouble in City Hall with Boris Johnson coming unstuck. Jon Mitchell shares this view predicting the Mayor will get suspended. A bold call indeed.

There’s no common theme in the team about when the next election will be. Paul Afshar is in good company with Alex Bigg and Jamie Lundie in thinking there won’t be a general election next year but Victoria Barton not only thinks there will be an election but goes as far as naming a date – 26 February 2009.

Turning to the Liberal Democrats, Amna Ahmad predicts a big reshuffle with Steve Webb kicked out and Chris Huhne getting demoted. She also thinks that Vince Cable’s position as commentator-par-excellence on the recession will cause further friction within the party.

Only Anthony Marlowe thinks Gordon Brown won’t be PM next year and predicts that Jack Straw, in a long awaited rise to power, will become leader of the Labour Party.

And as for me? I’m predicting a Labour gain in South West Devon. Of course.

Merry Christmas everyone and on behalf of Edelman we hope you have a Happy New Year.”
